How classification works
Trademarks in Iran are filed by reference to the Nice Classification, the international system that divides goods and services into 45 classes. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services. Each application lists the classes it covers and, within each class, the specific goods or services for which protection is sought.
The classes you choose define the scope of your rights. If your registration covers clothing but you later launch cosmetics under the same name, the clothing registration may not stop a third party from using a similar mark on cosmetics. That is why we look not only at what you sell today but at what you realistically plan to sell.
Writing a strong specification
Within each class the wording matters. A specification that is too narrow can leave gaps, while wording that is unclear can attract objections. We draft specifications that describe your goods and services precisely, follow accepted terminology and still leave room for the natural growth of your business.
- Start from what you actually sell and plan to sell within the next few years
- Consider related classes where a similar mark would confuse your customers
- Cover services as well as goods, for example retail or online sales
- Avoid vague expressions that examiners may question

Questions clients ask
Can I add classes after filing?
Generally a filed application cannot be broadened to new classes. If you need protection in additional classes later, a new application is usually required, so it is worth getting the classes right at the start.
Does more classes mean more cost?
Yes. Official and professional fees usually increase with each additional class, which is why we help you prioritise the classes that matter most.
Which class covers online shops and apps?
Downloadable software and apps generally fall in Class 9, software services in Class 42 and retail or online store services in Class 35. The right mix depends on your business model.
